Jack Dever -Director Of Post-Production

From the beginning of my life in video at San Francisco State, the best part of this industry has been the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. (Sure I just ended a sentence with a preposition, and Mrs. Anderson – 11th grade English teacher who kept calling me Danny Deaver which I thought was cool until I found out he was a character in a poem who gets hanged. Hung? - would not approve, but rules were made to be broken, right?).  Where was I? People. Right. The best part of this job has been, and continues to be the people I work with. (Dang. Another preposition).

It seems all the people who have helped me along the way have had a mixture of talent, patience and a joy in doing their jobs. I’ve tried to learn from all of them, and take away the best of each of them. The most important thing I’ve learned is that every person on a crew is important. When I’ve produced or directed, I’ve never shied away from asking for help from the D.P., actors, grips, make-up people or craft services. They are all part of the final project.

Sidebar… I hate movies that say “A film by so-and-so” Unless you wrote, shot, edited and acted in the movie, you had help. Honor those people. That’s why when I make my short films, I call them “A Group EnDever”. See that? Little play on the correct pronunciation of my name. Dang, I’m clever. Again, rhymes with Dever.

Right now I feel PACSAT has the best collection of talent of any facility I’ve ever worked at. (What is it with me and prepositions?) My job is so easy here. I never have to question or second guess anyone in the post department. Everyone has enough talent and experience that any suggestions I make are just that… suggestions.

I think of my job as your guide through the Jungleland cruise of video production. If you know where you want to go, I can get you there and keep an eye out for the angry hippos along the way.
